It seemed like days and days since I last ran, but I had had only one day off. It was raining and mid 40s, so I went to the Y to do my 4 mile run. There will be no strenuous runs this week leading up to Sunday's marathon.
I felt fresh, but it took me a full 3.5 miles to completely loosen up and get into a rhythm. By then my pace was 9:22, having worked down from 10. At 3.5, I felt really good and ready to go long, but today was not the day for that. I stepped down after 45 minutes and 4.56 miles.
The most interesting part of the run was my state of mind. For the first three miles, when I didn't feel smooth, I had all kinds of negative thoughts about the marathon. Could I go that far, would I fell terrible at the end, was there any way I could get a PR.
Once I leveled off and settled into an easy pace, I suddenly had nothing but positive thoughts about the marathon. I reminded myself I was in good shape, that the day would be cool and that I had a good strategy in mind. I knew it couldn't possibly be harder than my first two marathons, which were run in high humidity and heat.
Let's hope it works out that way.
