The schedule called for a 7 mile run with 4 of those miles at marathon pace. It was an exhilarating 57 with a slight breeze when I got out there at 5:10 a.m. I felt energetic and anxious to get going.
I looped in and out of cul-de-sacs and up and down streets in my own neighborhood for two miles before finally setting off for what I hoped would be several miles of marathon-paced running. Those first two miles were above race pace, but everything else after that was faster, and sometimes much faster. My fastest mile was 8:04 (mile 7). You won't catch me doing that in the marathon in October, that's for sure. After that I slowed down by 25 seconds so I could cool down.
I ran the extra 1.3 miles to catch up on the miles I missed by not running on Sunday. Now that I've done that for three days, I'm fully caught up.
The final numbers: 8.3 miles at an average pace of 8:46.
