I managed to get out for a run this morning, and while it wasn't quite like summer on the beach, it was a nice experience.
My hotel sits a half block off the water at Biscayne Bay, and my room is on the 17th floor overlooking the bay. It's an absolutely gorgeous view that practically forces you to get out for a first hand look on foot. The photo was taken from the balcony outside my room, and shows Venetian Causeway, which was my route.
When I packed by running gear it didn't even occur to me that it'd be cool in the mornings here, but it was just 54 at 7 a.m. I had no long sleeved shirt or light gloves, and it was a little breezy, so I briefly considered not going for fear it might be a little chilly. What am I, crazy? If it's too cold you can always turn around.
I had brought my GPS, but when I put it on it told me the battery was about dead. Sometimes that means I still have maybe an hour, but just to be sure I hooked my phone holster to my running shorts and took off. The GPS died before I took a single running step, so now all I had was the phone's Cardio Trainer app and the built in GPS. Happily, it worked great, recording 6.16 miles in 56:38, a pretty decent 9:11 pace.
The run took me to the town of South Beach, but not all the way to the sand. I really wanted to go to the end of the road, but I had to get back in time to get ready for work, so I turned around. On the way back I stopped several times to take photos and to take in the view.
I think I'll go out again Wednesday morning and keep an eye on the water. I'm told you can at times catch dolphins and manatees surfacing, definitely worth seeing.
