Distance: 6.8 miles
Time: 3 separate runs
Average: --
Run type: Half easy, half 5k race
Location: Downtown KC
Weather: 80, clear and humid.
Aches: Several (see post for Aug. 8).
Injuries: None
Observations: 1) 28,000-plus runners and walkers assembling for the Susan Komen Race for the Cure.
Thoughts: The race route was changed and made harder, which didn't disappoint me at all. It seemed fair that we runners shouldn't have an easy time when the people we were trying to benefit have such a hard time.
Session comments: I was sore everywhere from my hips on down from the regatta the day before. I was "rail meat" in the regatta, meaning I spent 4 hours scrambling back and forth across the deck of a 29-foot sailboat. To loosen, I ran 3 easy miles before the race, then raced the 5k, and finished with a two-thirds mile jog back to the car. I ran the 5k in 24:42, or a 7:52 pace, which wasn't as good as last year, but okay considering my bruised condition and the much hillier course. I checked the timed results (I didn't run with a chip), and I would have placed 7th in my age group out of 33).
