When I started out tonight I thought I'd get rained out, but the rain held off long enough for me to do 6.5 miles. And this run was one of the best I've had in a long time.
I started out determined to take it easy all the way. I was just over a pretty bad cold, and now I was battling a sinus infection and some accompanying chest congestion. The meds I'm taking have me feeling OK, but my breathing is a little labored and I just didn't think it'd be helpful to push it too hard.
I never checked my pace because I didn't want "pace" to be in my head during the run. I had the feeling most of the way that the overall average was going to be something like 9:20, and I was fine with that.
What happened, though, was that the easy early pace translated into an effortless and steady speedup all through the run. My splits were 9.42, 9.08, 8.47, 8.29, 8.17, 8.22 and 3.58 (8.10 pace). That's an 8:45 average.
Some day I'll be able to run smart like this every time out.
Oh, I got my jungle mowed afterward, too.
