Christmas Day, 2008

Merry Christmas all runners and their families, supporters, friends and race volunteers. Running isn't nearly as rewarding without all its essential parts.

This may accentuate my own training excessiveness, but I celebrated today with an 11-mile run. We don't have little kids pounding on our bedroom door at 6 a.m. anymore, so Christmas morning is a very laid back affair. I slept until I woke up naturally - no alarm - dressed for my run and headed out to the gym. It was cold and slippery out, and I just didn't feel like adding a lot of extra outdoor gear to my preparations.

When I got to the gym about 7:15 a.m. I was the only one there and really thought no one else was likely to show up. Eventually, though, several other people came in. I think one woman was in the gym for the first time, because her male companion took a picture of her on the treadmill.

I enjoy most of my runs, but after all the eating and drinking that has gone on in the last couple days, this one felt great. There's a lot to be said for starting a day with a 1,200-calorie burn. It took care of those two extra glasses of wine yesterday and sets me up for a nice big piece of pumpkin pie later today.

Speaking of pie, I believe it's time to graze. See ya.

Hope your day is merry.
