March 27, 2007

Overcast, 60.
I'm still sore today after Saturday's 20-mile run. Really, it's just my left thigh; everything else seems to have recovered.
I had a 6 miler today, which I was able to do at my leisure, since I don't go in to work until about 3 (it's election night). It was supposed to rain all morning, but when I got up it wasn't yet. The sky was overcast, but it didn't look like it was going to rain anytime soon. I headed for the river trail in Parkville.
Strange run, really. I never felt completely loose, and my legs just felt weary all the way. I tried to just take it easy and let whatever was going to happen, happen. As it turned out, after a warmup 9:50 I ran three miles slightly over 9, and two slightly under. My overall average was 9:08, so it turned out to be a nice tempo run.
I know my legs will rebound, but I'm a little concerned about my lack of energy in the latter stages of my long runs. I don't think it's training. I think it's proper nutrition on the run, so I've been reviewing all the literature on eating and drinking. It looks like I'm not taking in enough carbs in the form of GU or bloks, and I may not be drinking the proper amount of water along with it. It's important to drink as close to the exact amount called for as possible to facilitate the absorption of nutrients. I think maybe I'm not eating enough and then drinking too much.
I don't have much time to practice, with the race just a little more than 2 weeks away and no more long runs. I'll work it out.
