I was determined to get a run in today, despite the fact I wouldn't be able to get out until it was about as hot as it was going to get. I just felt like I really needed a run.
So, it was noon and just about 90 when I got to English Landing for a short run along the river. Along with the heat, it was humid, and when you were out of the shade it felt every bit of 100.
I started out slow and kept it that way for 4 miles. I planned to do just 4, but somewhere between 3 and 4 I could feel myself adjust to the heat, and I decided to go to 5. That last mile was the only one that couldt be considered fast, as I clocked it in 8:57. All the rest were between 9:35 and 9:54.
As I was running I was trying to imagine having to race in such weather. Your only approach can be to survive, and you might want to pull out.
Today was hot, but I've been hotter on cooler days. The key is to slow down, and today I did.
