With a junior high concert on the schedule this evening I planned to get up early for a short run on what promised to be a stupendous 80-degree day. I set my alarm for 5:15, but woke up to Kay's alarm at 6:15. I don't know what happened to mine.
I really wanted to run, so I considered my options:
1. Come home at lunchtime, run 3 miles, clean up, eat and get back to work (takes too long).
2. Leave work at 4 saying I needed to get to a school function, conveniently omitting the fact that the function was at 7 p.m. (a little too deceitful).
3. Skip the running and just walk at lunchtime, which I often do (at 80 degrees I thought I might be a little rank the rest of the day).
4. Don't run at all, just chill for the day (did that Monday, so it was out of the question for Tuesday).
But at 7:45 I realized I still had one other option. I didn't need to leave for work until 8:40, so if I hit the bricks immediately I could run for 30 min. and still have time to shower and get to work on time. I was out the door 5 minutes later.
If it was was going to be a 30 min. run I didn't have any time to waste. Instead of walking for the first half mile, I started my run in the driveway and ran up the hills out of the subdivision. It was already 51 degrees and sunny, so it was a perfect time of day to run. I did the first mile in 9:50, made the turn at 1.6 miles, and then did two miles-plus at an under 9 pace. I finished with 3.34 miles in 30:15, a 9:04 pace.
I had left enough time to clean up and get to work on time, but it was close. I couldn't sit around and cool down naturally, so I finished my shower in cold water to speed up the process.
So, I got my run in and even got an extra hour of sleep. Good start to the day.
