Got up at 5:20 this morning and was out running 20 min. later. It was already 76.5 degrees and humid. I did 6 miles and took it easy all the way, averaging 9:47 per mile. Now I can sit out the worst of today's heat and all of Friday's.
I didn't see a single deer on this morning's run, which is unusual. However, when I got home there was a young doe in the back yard. It didn't bolt when came out the door, and even let me get within about 10 feet. I stood there talking to it for several minutes, its ears twitching back and forth and its front leg tapping the ground as if it was counting. It made no show of alarm whatsoever. If anything it seemed to be curious.
I considered trying to get closer, but finally turned and walked back to the back door. When I looked back she had followed me, keeping that 10-foot distance. After another short face-to-face, she headed for the fence line and started eating leaves from the bushes. By the time I got back inside and upstairs, she was gone.
Strange encounter.
