November 6, 2008

Despite a cold-turned-sinus-infection that drained my energy, and a tiring work schedule modified by the election, I still managed to get my workouts in. I never felt bad enough not to work out or not to go to work, so I just kind of slogged through all of it. I'm feeling better today after taking my nurse's advice regarding medication.
On election day I ran a 10k that seemed a little too difficult all the way through. Nevertheless, I averaged 8:22 per mile. Today on the treadmill I did 5.5 miles at a 9:15 average and was glad when it was over. Friday is rest. I hope that by Saturday I will be completely over this sinus business.

The half-marathon project
J should be winding up her first week of training by now. Week 2's training consists of three identical workouts: Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 90 seconds of jogging and two minutes of walking for a total of 20 minutes.

The goal of the first 8-9 weeks of training is to slowly build up to a competitive 5k run. Once that's achieved, J will start training for her half marathon. As a preview, the first week of training will consist of two three mile runs and a four mile run, so you can see why it's important to become comfortable doing three miles.

Both segments of the training are designed for a novice, which describes J, and are subject to modification as she reports her progress.
