Half marathon project
Week three of pre-training is coming up. The workout schedule looks like this:
Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then do two repetitions of the following:
Jog 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
Walk 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
Jog 400 yards (or 3 minutes)
Walk 400 yards (or three minutes)
Use this same workout each day. Remember, you can do a little more or a little less, but not a lot more or a lot less. There's enough running now that the proper shoes are becoming more important. If you don't have 'em, go get 'em. Don't risk an unnecessary injury.

My own training for my March marathon is now under way, and since I don't get home from work until after dark, I've been running on a treadmill. My legs are having a tough time adjusting to the surface, so I feel a bit sorer than I would normally after 17 miles so far this week. Also, since I won't be able to run Saturday or Sunday, I'm trying to cram all my miles into the middle of the week, which is not my normal schedule. I usually like to run every other day so I can fully recover. I'll finish my weekly running Friday with 8 or 9 miles and then rest the legs for a couple of days.

My next race is at Living History Farms in Des Moines Nov. 22. Watch this video to see what it's like. Crazy, I tell ya.

Niece A here. I've been a bit behind and am only one work-out into my training. There's no excuse but I haven't been a regular at the gym for the majority of 2008. Not only deciding to start working out again but to declare that I'm going to be training and working out in ways I've never done, I knew I was going to need superhuman levels of motivation to Start. Start with a capital S. Rob's frequent training updates have been great, as with every update I was reminded about how procrastinating/lazy/terrible I was for not having even Started to train. And I am proud to announce that last night the motivation and guilt was so strong that I punched procrastination in the face and went to the gym. I Started. Generally, I am someone who considers herself somewhat athletic, having played virtually every sport at some point in my life, and who - although a bit streaky - works out pretty regularly. Regardless, I have never really been much of a runner. Elliptical, yes. Walking and lifting weights, yes. Running, not so much. So I felt last night like I had to Start by proving to myself that, yes, I am athletic enough to handle this 13.1 mile goal, I can do this. So, naturally, I proceeded to ignore Rob's training instructions and did something I'd never done before - run 2 miles without stopping. Without stopping! NO STOPS. It felt great. I ran ridiculously slow and even resisted the 17 urges I had throughout the 2 miles to increase my speed. Even with the turtle-like pace, I stepped out of bed this morning and my legs fell off. I looked down at them thinking that loss of limbs was probably appropriate punishment for breaking the rules and resolved to never again try to prove I was superwoman. I promised myself I would listen to instructions from then forward, picked my legs up off the floor, and hobbled off.

Observations to note:

- After the first mile my lower back started to ache ever so slightly. It doesn't hurt now nor did it after the run, but I'll have to keep monitoring this to figure out the cause. I'm hoping it's just that my body isn't used to running on a treadmill. Eh, or running period. I usually have somewhat decent core body strength, so hopefully that isn't it. My shoes are in decent shape too and have low mileage, although all I can consider mileage is the number of times they've been to the curb and back to pick up the paper. They fit really well but weren't specifically fitted by a running shoe expert. My plan is to replace them before 2009 arrives, but I'm only going to give it a couple more workouts before deciding if that date needs to be moved up.

- The sparkly, chunk-of-the-earth that now resides on my left hand is kind of annoying during a run. Not only is it constantly sliding around on my finger but I'm not (yet?) the smoothest of runners and I hit it several times on the bars of the treadmill as my arms flailed around. Dainty band will make the cut next time. Rock will not.

- I ran without headphones on and didn't really miss the music. As far as I am aware all road races strongly discourage, if not ban, the use of headphones. I thought if I never trained with them then I wouldn't miss 'em. It was actually kind of nice to be able to day dream and not have to worry about the ear buds that always seem to have difficulty staying where I want them to. Like, in my ears.

- I stretched quite a bit when I got home, but am not sure if I'm doing enough or the right ones. I stretched everything in my legs I could think of and held each one for a good minute. I'll have to research that a bit more, I think.

Simple Yoga on the Wii is planned for tonight, my next running workout Wednesday. Yay.
