The weather guy on TV had it right: he called for thunderstorms through Saturday morning and that's just what we got. Thunder, lightning and heavy rain.
So, for my last real workout before the marathon, I headed for the Y. The place was all but deserted at 7 a.m., which meant that I could monopolize a treadmill for an hour and a half and no one would care.
The schedule called for 10 miles at marathon pace, so after a 10-plus opening mile, I ran between 8:57 and 9:13 the rest of the way. I resisted the temptation to throw in some speed work, since I didn't want to do anything that might result in any kind of injury. There isn't time anymore to come back from a pull, tear or serious cramp. My total mileage was 10.5.
I'm not a big fan of long miles on a treadmill. Around 6 or 7 is as far as I like to take it indoors. The air doesn't move, there's no changes in the terrain, you can't simulate up and down hills and there is little to look at. As a result, I don't think I run as well indoors as I usually do outdoors.
Still, it's far better than prolonged exposure to lightning.
Next Saturday's weather calls for an even chance of rain. That'd be a bummer. Let's all pray for a rain respite.
