March 18, 2007
We were in Des Moines for the weekend, but I still had time to do my 12-mile run on Saturday morning. It was kind of tough getting up after staying up past midnight Friday, but I was out the door and ready to go at 7:20 a.m. The temperature was about 30, and there was light to moderate snowfall. I'd been directed to a nearby trail, which proved to be a wonderful route in a wooded area alongside a major street.
My intent was to run 10-minute miles, in part to be careful with a sore left knee which has been bothering me since last Tuesday's run. I don't know what I did to deserve this malady. It's not real bad, but it worries me a little. It'll be interesting to see how I can handle the upcoming 20-miler this weekend.
Anyway, I felt quite good for the first 10 miles, and was averaging slightly over 9 min. per mile, when my knee started to ache a bit. I slowed the pace for the last two miles and finished with an average of 9:16.
I think I'll baby my knee this week and cut my midweek mileage to about half the normal amount.
